The fun aspect of the fiddle is the upbeat nature of fiddle music. Where violin is basically an orchestral instrument, fiddle can be played with country music, church music, jazz, and other genres. It really offers a unique sound in whatever genre it is being played in.

Does it matter if you take violin lessons in the beginning? No, you can take classical violin lessons as a matter of fact. It really has no bearing on your progression, other than giving you more depth in your playing.

The main thing you want to do as you are learning your fiddle is to listen. Decide which genres you want to be able to fiddle in, and then listen to as much of that music as possible. Listen to other fiddle players. The only way to learn a particular style is to be able to hear it in your head.

Develop your ear. Great musicians play by ear. If you can learn to play by ear, there will be no limit to your ability to play the fiddle. It is like a Mocking Bird. They listen to other birds, and then imitate their sounds. You need to imitate the fiddle music you like. Absorb it, and train your ear to manifest it.

If you approach learning fiddle with the typical violin lessons, you will be fine. You might even find joy in playing classical music. Just make sure you are listening to the types of music you intend on playing. If you devote yourself to learn, listen, and train your ear, you will become a great fiddle player.

Do you want to see your fiddle playing explode? If so, you must visit my Learning Fiddle site to get information on the program that can have you playing like a pro in days.

Flute listening can help you become a fine flutist nearly as much as the practicing you do on the flute yourself.

Why?

Flute listening helps you…

Learn the flute repertoire. The more familiar you are with what has been composed for the flute, the broader your flute knowledge becomes.

Learn pieces faster. Knowing how a piece sound should makes the learning process go faster. Get those rhythms correct the first time, play ornaments correctly, and incorporate dynamics from the beginning.

Incorporate flute techniques into your own playing, including developing a good tone, vibrato, breathing, and phrasing.

Learn to play various styles appropriately. Mozart is played differently than Prokofiev, and sometimes just listening is easier to absorb the style than having a teacher talk to you about it for an hour.

Flute listening is inspirational! Just imagine yourself playing that fabulous piece you’ve fallen in love with and you’re halfway toward being able to actually play it! Even if you never play anywhere but your living room, it makes it much more fun!

There is so much wasted time in our days that we could turn into valuable listening time…

Driving

Standing in line

Waiting in the doctor’s office or for other appointments

Using an iPod or other MP3 player allows you to listen to flute music anywhere, anytime. Every flutist needs to have one of these devices as part of their equipment, along with a metronome, digital tuner, and music stand. An iPod is so compact that you can easily pack it in a flute bag or purse. It’s even more convenient than a small CD player.

Start listening and become a better flutist!

By David Braybrooke

INTRODUCTION -

Having studied pianoforte technique for a period of 15 years as well as sitting numerous examinations and working as a private music teacher, I can categorically state that technical exercises are an essential part of a good pianist’s everyday practice session. They keep one’s fingers nimble and tend to promote a smooth, even tone when playing.

However, when I started working as a professional musician playing the keyboard, I did notice a certain wooden quality to some of my performances of jazz standards and popular Broadway tunes. As I had been classically trained in Pianoforte techniques I found it difficult at times to free up my skills sufficiently in order to tackle free-form compositions.

Looking from a broad musical perspective the pros and cons of technical exercises are:

PROS -

. Keyboard fluidity of tone is maintained. Technique books such as “Czerny’s School of velocity” provide 100’s of solid technical exercises that promote smooth execution when performing scales and melodic runs.

. Good technique is promoted in many areas through the practicing of specific exercises. Skills learned are transferable when one is performing complex musical works as many of the greatest composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Bach, Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninoff and others wrote complex works that were built up through advanced technical-based passages; no matter if one is playing a sonata, piano concerto, rhapsody or something relatively simple such as a waltz or nocturne, good technique is an essential in order to convincingly perform many works.

. Having good piano technique is a bit like physical fitness for an athlete. It allows a musician to perform at a consistently high level and reduces the risk of tiredness or repetitive strain injury (R.S.I.) if one is playing for long periods.

. Good technique allows one a greater versatility when playing.

CONS -

. An established technique can at times promote a conservative and orthodox state-of-mind in some performers; when one attempts to play jazz compositions or in more modern style such as that found in atonal and impressionist compositions, one sometimes has a tendency to be a bit stiff in execution. Depending on the style or school of music attempted, appropriate technique may have to be tailored and necessary adjustments made.

. Some technically proficient pianists tend to lack originality when playing; they may be pitch perfect and smooth yet substandard in musical ingenuity and artistic flair.

. As technical exercises are inclined to be a bit on the dry side and quite boring to master they are often seen as being the least enjoyable part of learning to play the piano.

CONCLUSION -

As with most disciplines it is important that one establishes a solid foundation in any skill that is learned and it is hard to deny that good piano technique will give an individual a solid practical grounding when improving one’s overall musicality; nothing will improve the standard of overall performance like a solid technique.

Once you have learned the basics of how to play the electric bass guitar, the next thing that can be learned is playing the different notes of the instrument.

To begin, pluck the 4th string without using your fretting hand. This is known as “open” playing. The resulting note is E. Plucking the strings below would produce the sounds of A, D, and G. Each sound produced is higher than the previous one.

From the 4th string, position the index finger of your fretting hand on the initial fret, which is found between the nut and first fret. Hold it down firmly on the initial fret, use the index finger on your plucking hand and pluck the 4th string. The resulting sound is a half-step higher than plucking the 4th string alone.

Move your fingers up to the second fret and pluck the 4th string again. You will produce a sound that has a higher octave than the previous one. For the remaining strings, begin by playing open then on the initial fret, and so on.

If the sound being produced is muffled, out of key, or simply bad, check your fretting finger and see if you are holding it firmly down the note or positioned directly in the middle of the fret.

Remember that your fingers should be directly positioned in the middle of the frets as this will create a “truer” sound. As much as possible, avoid over sliding your fingers too close to either fret.

Bear in mind that individual notes have specific values associated with them. As you go up to a higher fret, the values of the notes change as well. These values are used by musicians to determine where in the neck they will play to produce a specific note.

As you move higher on the fretboard, the value of each note increases by half a step for individual frets. This way, you will easily find your wanted note. Simply move up and down the guitar neck until you find the note you are looking for.

The basic difference between a classic guitar and the electric bass guitar is the latter does not involve any chords. However, there are some bass guitarists who use chords when playing. With an electric bass guitar, every note is important. You can focus on playing the notes or opt to be a counter melody for the lead guitar.

Learning how to play notes is one of the important steps of understanding how to play the electric bass guitar.

The bass guitar is one of the simplest instruments to learn to play; the challenge is how to master it. Though it is one of those instruments that make the simplest sounds but with mastery it makes the most complex of melodies. It is easy to learn to play the bass guitar because unlike other instruments where you need to learn multiple finger placements because of complicated note and chord patterns, the bass guitar has a simplified note structure. By no means is it a second-rate instrument.

Now to learn how to play the bass guitar you need to understand the basic principles surrounding the bass. The bass guitar is considered to be one of the most important elements of making music. Whether it’s the slapping beats in a heavy metal song or the overly pronounced sounds that it makes in a hip hop single the bass guitar serves as a formidable element in any song or in any beat. The foundations of the song itself are loosely based on the presence of the bass guitar. Many musicians would agree the bass guitar makes the music come alive in a way that leaving it behind would cause some considerable question in the listener’s ear.

This serves as a beginner’s guide to playing the bass guitar. This article leans toward the easier way to learn the bass without having to go to a music school or enroll in classes specifically targeting budding bass players. Now as a precaution it is advised that you start of with a fretted bass guitar rather than a fretless one because it would help you get a feel of the bass guitar and the music it makes.

First off, you need to learn if you play right-handed or left-handed. Once you’ve performed this you are ready to go to the next step. Getting comfortable with your instrument, when you’re practicing you need to find a good comfortable position to play the bass guitar. Usually sitting down with the bass resting on your thigh is the best way to go. The bass guitar has four primary notes, the topmost string is the E note, the second is the A note, the third is the G note and the last is the D note. Try strumming on it a few times to get a feel of the sound. Practice this a couple times in a day until it’s second nature to you to change notes without looking at the strings or the bass guitar.

If you are a singer, or an aspiring singer then you probably have a decent voice already. However you need to constantly improve, and practice your technique in order to stay on top of things. After all the songs aren’t going to sing themselves, as far as how to improve your singing voice there are many methods. Just keep in mind it’s not something that will happen quickly.

First of let’s take a look at what you did to develop your voice in the first place. You probably sang along with songs on the radio, or songs you had on CD. You constantly practices, then practiced more, and finally practiced even more. When everyone else said you were doing too much and going overboard you just kept practicing. This has lead you to where you are now. The method for improving yourself is the same, practice.

If you want to improve your singing voice then start with the basics. Do the basic vocal exercises you practiced when first starting out, and then move onto the more advanced exercises. After that start singing along with songs again. Try the simple ones first like when you first started out, and then move on to the more complex songs.

Try to match the singers pitch, and hold the words as long as they can. Many people forget to do these basic steps when trying to improve. They think because they got this far they do not have to go over the basics anymore. This is a very deadly mistake in any industry, but especially singing. Regardless of what you do for a living, if it’s a specialized trade you need to keep practicing.

Going back to the basics is just one way to improve your singing voice. Other ways may be to take more advanced lessons from instructors, although this will be costly. Another thing you can try besides singing along is vocalization exercises. Try tones and pitches you aren’t use to singing and improve yourself in these areas. You never know when it may come in handy.

Of course no matter what you do if you don’t have the breath to back up your singing there’s really no point. In this regard you should do exercises to improve your lung capacity, and endurance. Running, jogging, and any kind of exercise that improves your lung capacity will serve this purpose. It’s important to consider what forms the foundation of the skill you are trying to improve. In creasing the base attribute of the skill will improve the skill itself.

In closing learning how to improve your singing voice isn’t hard, in fact it’s quite easy; just do what you did when you started out. Always rehearse the basics so you have a constant handle on them. After that trying things you haven’t done before, you may discover you have a talent for singing notes you never thought you could hit. Never be afraid to do this, after all one does not learn, and grow if one does not do something they have never done before. Don’t forget to take care of yourself as well, keep those lungs healthy, and improve their capacity, otherwise your singing won’t last very long.

Skyler started singing in church and fell in love with jazz and R&B at an early age.

Many people want to learn electric guitar in the easiest and fastest way possible. However, what people don’t realize is that learning an instrument is never an easy thing. It takes determination and will-power to submit oneself to the everyday task of practicing.

On the other hand, there is a certain something that can let you ignore the hard task of learning the guitar. First, this article will give you a few simple hints on what that little secret is. So read on if you want to know what it is.

A wise man once said that you have to learn how to walk before you can start learning how to run. With electric guitars, you need to learn the basics first. That means you have to study up on chords or basic notes on the guitar first if you want to learn electric guitar. Memorization of chords, riffs, and notes can be fun for you if you start learning them with songs. Learning a few songs happens to be the first step to becoming a real guitarist.

The fastest way you can learn electric guitar is through jamming. Once you’ve memorized enough scales and chords, you can have fun jamming with a friend who also knows how to play the guitar. If your friend happens to be better than you, then it’s a good incentive to aspire to be the best. As long as you know that it’s a healthy competition and you don’t end getting envious every time, you’ll definitely have fun jamming while learning.

Guitar clinics are also helpful, and not to mention fun for you since you’ll be amazed at how awesome those guitarists can be. They’ll probably start off with some shredding exhibition, but in the end they’ll let you in on some tips that can let you master a particular lick quickly. You’re there to learn electric guitar, so it’s absolutely vital that you open your ears to what the featured guitarist is saying, and not just his notes. Listening is the most important element in music, and that is the key to learning how to play.

So what’s the secret? Well here it is (if you haven’t guessed it already): It’s all about having FUN with it. If you don’t have fun while learning, then you’ll most likely have a hard time practicing the guitar. That’s why it’s called playing the guitar, not working the guitar. Fun is the most important element of creativity.

You’re supposed to be creative with the way you play, while learning the basics. Don’t treat it like it’s a job because if you ever learn how to play with that mindset, all you’ll become is a copycat and without your own soulful style of playing. People learn faster when they’re having fun, especially when it comes to music.

As a final tip for those who want to learn electric guitar quickly: Practice every day but stop if you’re fingers begin hurting too much. You certainly won’t enjoy your guitar any more if your fingers keep bleeding. Also, never be too lazy to learn new things. Learn to open your mind so you can enjoy playing music with your newly acquired electric guitar skills.

Understanding music theory is probably the best thing that any musician can give to himself. If you’ve learned to play an instrument by ear, then that’s an awesome accomplishment. But what makes a musician a complete one is not just through listening to the notes (though that in itself is the most important factor to being a musician); it is also about understanding what makes a certain piece of music work. This means that a musician must have a good grasp of the most important elements of music in order to truly become a complete musician.

Melody

Melody is the most basic element of a piece of music. Though a melody cannot exist without following a basic scale, a scale by itself cannot really be used to create music, simply because the music would sound too redundant if patterned in the order of scales. Rather, picking notes from within a particular scale and reordering them to fit a certain chord progression is the most common way to create a melody. In short, a melody is the end result of a scale. It is the most important aspect of making a particular music sound a lot more pleasing. Used in conjunction with rhythmic patterns, dynamics, and harmony, a melody’s original effect/purpose can be enhanced.

Scales

A scale is a group of notes that acts as a sort of skeletal structure for a piece of music. Without a basic knowledge of musical scales, a musician will find it hard to compose a piece of music simply because he/she wouldn’t know which notes or chords would fit and complement the entirety of a song. Knowledge of scales strengthens your understanding of basic music theory and is absolutely vital if you want to develop your ear.

Rhythm

A rhythm is a pattern or placement of sounds (notes, chords, percussions, etc) within a musical time. In a repetitive beat of 4/4 measure, the rhythm is structured around it and reorganized according to the composer’s preference. Having different patterns of a group of notes makes your melody sound even more pleasing to the ear, especially if it’s conjoined with dynamic styles of playing such as velocity, staccato, or legato variations. You could say that a rhythm is a series of a collection of parts of a beat. Much like how melody comes from scales, the rhythm also comes from the beat.

Beat

The beat is the most basic measurement of a piece of music. It connotes the tempo (speed or pace) of a song or a musical sequence. A beat is basically the counting of a measure wherein you would create patterns and grooves within its repetitions. For example: A 3/4 measure would be counted as 1-2-3 repetitively until the song ends (or when another measurement interjects). Likewise, a 4/4 measure would normally be counted as 1-2-3-4 repetitively too.

Harmony

Harmony is an element of music that complements sections (or large parts) of a melody. Though it is sometimes used as a contrapuntal series of notes (counterpoint), its basic usage is to heighten a melody’s purpose within a segment of a song. Think of harmony as the added features of a car. A car can look a lot cooler due to gold reams, gold bumpers, etc. That’s what harmony is; it makes a melody sound a lot cooler. Harmony basically comes from scales and sometimes starts as a contrapuntal 3rd or 5th note to the root note.

Dynamics

Dynamics is basically the volume of how each note is played within a rhythmic pattern. It is usually dependent of rhythm but it can also be interjected as a singular instance that repeats rarely. However, when it comes to rhythmic patterns, a frequent usage of the volume style is usually repeated after every other pattern (though that isn’t absolute). Dynamics also refers to the style of how each note is played. Staccato (a style of dynamics) is used to cut short the sound of a note (or a rhythmic pattern of notes). Legato, another style, is basically used as a way of prolonging notes so as there is no obvious gap in between the rhythmic note patterns.

Having a basic knowledge of these important elements of music can definitely increase your musical skills and allow you to truly become a complete musician. Though it’s not required for you to do an in-depth study of these elements (simply because you only need to have a good grasp of their concepts), it’s still a great idea.

By Guest Blogger Alex N Johnson

It is an undeniable fact that guitar is a very attractive instrument. It mixes the bold and the soft together, as a piece of instrument. The amazing thing about guitars though, is that it contains only 6 strings, and the melody produced is nothing to be scoffed at. For a beginner, you should start by taking up beginner guitar lessons.

The reason is that you will want to master all the basics first, such as strumming the guitar, picking specific strings and learning the many chords of guitar. You will not be able to produce music if you don’t have a strong and deep foundation in the basics. It’s like trying to run before trying to stand up and keep the standing position.

As such, the first thing you need for your beginner guitar lessons is, you guessed it, a guitar. A guitar is a must-have before diving into guitar lessons. Many beginners make the mistake of not buying a guitar, for fear that they bought one that is not suitable to them. Don’t worry, just get a cheap one as a start. It doesn’t have to be fancy, it just needs to produce music.

The next step is to find a tutor, or look for an online guitar course. Based on your preference, you can choose either a private tutor or online guitar courses. Private tutors are generally expensive and eat up your time, thus it is not really suitable for busy people. Online guitar courses however, are better choices if you have a hectic schedule, not to mention it’s cheap too!

If you choose to learn the guitar through a private tutor, then you should make a trip down to your local music school and ask if they provide guitar learning services. Usually, there are more than 2 tutors available, so don’t worry about not finding one. Alternatively, you could try looking up the phone directory to see if any tutor is advertising his services.

But if you prefer online guitar courses to private tutoring, then making a search on Google will bring you lots of courses. There are many courses catered to different guitarists of different skill levels, but finding online beginner guitar lessons will not be taxing. Personally, due to my busy schedule, I learn my guitar skills through an online beginner guitar course.

After selecting your path, the hard part comes. You have to practice everyday, or as long as your time permits. As the saying goes, “practice makes perfect”, and I can’t agree more. The more you practice, the better you get. There is no shortcut or special techniques that can make you an instant Kurt Cobain overnight. No pain, no gain. Therefore,

Drawing to the end of my article, here, I provide a summary for those that prefer not to read that much. The summary is written in a step-by-step format, making it easy for you to read. However, if you have read through my article, then this summary will reiterate what I have mentioned.

Step 1: Buy a guitar. Get a cheap one that is still usable.

Step 2: Based on your lifestyle and financial status, choose to learn the guitar whether through online guitar courses or a private tutor. Typically, online courses are cheaper and provides more freedom for busy people, as you can choose the time you want to start your own lesson.

Step 3: Practice, practice, and MORE practice. Practice makes perfect, and if you put nothing in it, you’ll get nothing in return.dedicate some time to practice and hone your skills.

That’s it for my article! Do you want to be a pro guitar player in 30 days or less? Click here for my full story! Alternatively, you could check out my blog for more beginner guitar lessons that you could benefit from. All rights reserved.
