When you are cleaning the metal parts, you can use mild brass polish to clean it. Just make sure that it does not go on to the wood, because it could affect the wood surface. When cleaning the pick-ups, never use any kind of liquid. It can cause the pick-up to have shortage and would require you to change them.
When cleaning the fingerboard, remove the strings first. There is a fingerboard oil which can be used to restore the wood on the fingerboard, while for frets you can use jewelry polishing oil.
When cleaning strings, you can just swipe it with cotton cloth and a few drops of rubbing alcohol. Rub the cloth up and down the strings length to remove any dirt. But do make sure that no alcohol would reach the wood, since it could dry the wood. When buying any kind of cleaning polish or cleaning materials, make sure that they are quality products.
When something spills over the guitar, wipe it immediately with warm damp cloth to remove any liquid or solid residues which can cause damage on the guitar. If you think some solid or liquid parts have into some seams and openings, then it would be best to take it to a professional musical instrument cleaner.
Care and Maintenance
When not being used, keep the guitar inside the case to make sure that it does not get dusty. Make sure that you place your bass guitar far from any hear source, windows, doors. Do not leave it inside your car for a long period of time. Play your guitar often, the more it gets played the better it sounds. At the same time, you get to be better with your instrument if you keep on playing it.
When detuning or removing the strings, do not remove all the strings at once. The neck can get damaged. There is a truss rod which is in the neck counterbalances the tension caused by strings, when relieved suddenly of the balance it could break. But it is important to change your strings regularly. This depends of course how frequent you play the instrument.
