Is There a Need to Read the Music When Playing the Electric Bass Guitar?

by Kevin on July 5, 2009

Many people would say there is no need to learn to read music when playing an instrument. But for those who have been playing instruments such as the electric bass guitar for a long-time, they believe that learning to read music means you are serious in your craft.

Knowing how to read music is essential if you are playing the electric bass guitar regularly because it enables you to recall the notes without having to record it. If you want to not record your notes, then you need to learn the standard music notation at least.

This technique has been around for many decades, since the monks in Europe discovered it, and since then, it has become a universal guideline used for music notation.

Many beginners may be intimidated by this because they feel that it’s hard to do. But if you put your mind to it, reading music can be simple. All you need to do is to know what note you are going to play and the duration. One great alternative to reading music is learning Tablature or “TAB” – but it is not as good as learning the real thing.

Here are some of the basic guidelines in reading music that would help you play the electric bass guitar more effectively:

1. The time signature. This is at the beginning of the music and prepares the musician for how the song is to be played. There is a top number that tells how many beats there are in the measure. The bottom number shows which type of note receives one beat.

2. The staff. Music is written on a musical chart comprised of five lines and four spaces and is used to represent particular pitches or sounds in a certain musical piece.

3. The measures. Any musical piece is divided or separated into measures in which each of these measures is separated usually by a bar line.

4. The rests. These are sets of notes that are usually used to point out that “no notes are to be played for the period of time”. This is usually defined by the particular rest notation that is present in the musical compositions.
