I’m not the most musical person. I can’t read a note and I can’t carry a tune. However, I discovered that I can play a recorder musical instrument. This is no accident. Way back when I was in 6th grade all of the students had one and we were required to play the recorder musical instrument for class.

There are very few things that I remember when I was in 6th grade. One of the strongest memories I have is music class. I can still hear the class trying to play “Mary Had a Little Lamb” in unison using the recorder musical instruments. Though we didn’t sound very good, it was a memorable experience.

I also learned quite a bit during that brief time using the recorder musical instrument. I don’t remember the details but I used to know all of the notes on a music sheet. There is no way I can tell an A from an E today but during my 6th grade year at elementary school I knew them all.

There was something magical about the sound that the recorder musical instrument makes. I used to imagine that it was fairy music in the forest or some such thing that a child would dream up at that age. The recorder musical instrument was a magical item to me. It was a shame that I never kept up with playing.

Part of the reason that the interest died away was because we had to give the recorder musical instrument back to the school at the end of the year. By the time summer ended I was on my way to a new grade in the big middle school. To be honest the recorder was the last thing on my mind.

Now that I have a child who is in elementary school I am amazed by how different things are. She is learning how to play the recorder musical instrument much earlier and we actually have the option of purchasing the item outright. Of course, that is what we decided to do.

I was also amazed that I knew how to play “Mary Had a Little Lamb” on my daughter’s recorder musical instrument. It was just like second nature. I may have hit a sour note here or there but the process all came back to me once I picked the recorder up. Hopefully, my daughter will keep up with playing.
