Want to Feel Better, Write a Song

Everyone has a favorite song or style of music. It makes us feel good. Music can stir a variety of emotions and moods. It can also be a way to get your mind off of things. When you were in school we all had to write short stories, poems, or essays.

You were either good at it or not. You also were given restrictions on what you could write about or the topic at hand. That always made it more difficult. What if you could write whatever you wanted, express whatever you felt, whenever you wanted to? That’s how most song lyrics are written. I, myself utilize this technique to let off steam, express an emotion, or just to have some fun. It is a great, convenient way to express yourself. It is also very personal and liberating.

No one has to read it or everyone can. You control the rules. It is the basic right of “freedom of speech” at its best. What do you write about? Anything you want to or know about. The Beach Boys early songs were all about surfing, girls, and cars. There’s nothing more basic than that. Sit down with a notebook and pen, and try it. It may take a while to get started. The more you do, the easier it is for you to collect your writing thoughts. Here’s an exercise to get it started. Every day when you have the strongest emotions of that day, describe it in writing. If it’s the elation over a surprise gift, or the disappointment of an argument, write it down. Remember, you can write whatever you want, in any way you want.

There aren’t that many outlets in life with that type of carte blanche! Spill it out, let your hair down, write what you normally wouldn’t say. You can be the expert, make the joke, or let out hostilities. Then you can either throw it away or submit it online. You are in control. Let out your feelings and feel better. It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks, how good it is, or if it changes the world. It changes your world and can become a positive outlet for anyone. Hum some melodies with it and who knows, you may even write your own songs. Have fun, let go, and write. The worst that could happen is you’ll have a more interesting grocery list.
