If you are ever going to excel at playing the piano, one of the most important things that you can do is to practice. Without practice, you will never be able to master this instrument. Of course you may not be sure how to go about practicing the right way. So, here are some simple practicing tips that will help you to get the most out of your time each time that you practice.
Notice Mistakes and Improve Them
When you are practicing, if you really want to see results, it is important that you notice any mistakes that you make and improve upon them. While you don’t want to be distracted by mistakes or even scared of them, it is important that you recognize them if you want to get better at playing the piano. Of course you don’t have to necessarily stop each time you make a mistake, but note the problem and go back and fix it.
Study the Music
When you are trying to practice, it is important that you study the music. You shouldn’t always just pick it up and start playing. However, you should take the time to go over and study the music that you are going to play. Figure out difficult areas where you may have problems and note key areas that you will need to be aware of within the music. This is important if you want to get the most out of your practice.
Work on Blocking Distractions
You’ll need to work on blocking distractions while you are practicing as well. If you are constantly being interrupted or distracted while you are trying to practice the piano, more than likely you are going to have a hard time actually getting anything out of the practicing that you are doing. So, make sure that you practice in a place where there are no distractions and work to make sure that you get rid of any distractions that may be in your mind at the time so you can focus on practicing.
Spend Quality Time
Quality time is important as well if you want to get the most out of practicing. When you are practicing, usually you should spend about an hour a day practicing as a minimum. The more you practice the better you will become, so make sure that you spend plenty of quality time practicing the piano.
As you know, practicing is going to make the difference between a mediocre pianist and a great way. So, it’s important that you know how to practice for the best results. Make sure that you spend plenty of time practicing and that you keep these simple tips in mind to help you out.

Thanks for the tips – good to see others pointing towards the need for good practice skills.
I would however make a couple of comments on your last 2 points. Firstly I think it is sometimes healthy to actually practice with distractions. Imagine if you always practice somewhere quiet, free from distraction and you come to your performance and someone in the front row is rustling a sweet wrapper. If you are not used to distractions it might be more difficult to deal with.
I agree in part with your last part – quality practice is very important. I would myself however step away from any practice method that was based purely on time and I don’t like to stipulate minimum or maximum practice times. Instead I like to think in terms of achievement. What did I achieve in this practice session? Did I do what I set out to? You could practice for an hour everyday and not get anything done . . . .
I already subscribe to your feed, but I’ve given you a digg and a del anyway
Hi, I’ve finally got round to updating the links section on my site (howtopractise.com) – I thought I’d let you know (perhaps you’d like to reciprocate

To practice the piano properly is spending hours at it just running through routines that you find difficult to master. Once you have mastered these, go through another set of routines, once you have mastered these then go through both routines together until these have been mastered. You need to practice slowly so that you can master the essence of the piece. You must have patience and time. Playing the piano is an artform and skill that requires alot of dedication and understanding of what you are trying to achieve. Know your limitations and above all learn from your mistakes. It is more about mastering the art what it is you are doing wrong than what you are doing right. What I mean by that is unless you know how not to play a piece of music you will never know when you are playing it right.
I have been in many professional bands in my life and part of my learning was to play with others and watch and learn from the best.
