Why Should You Do a Warm Up Activity Before Singing?

Doing a warm up before a performance is necessary for singers. Singing can become physically draining too. Being a singer doesn’t only mean going up on stage and performing. It also means tons of practice and hours of preparation.
Singing is just like exercising. You have to do an effective warm up routine before the heavy ones so as to perform well in the long run. And if taken in the context of singing, a singer warms up before a performance so as to be able to withstand the strains that singing could possibly give. And here are more reasons why a singer should warm up before a performance:
1. To get in touch with himself. A singer has to condition himself, both psychologically and physically to the task of singing. Doing so, he’d be able to deliver the notes better, and feel the song best. A beautiful rendition of a song is noted most of the times, not because the singer has sung it well, but he did it with the right emotions overflowing.
2. To energize himself. Warming up would have the ability to summon, in an exact and slow manner, the singer’s innate strength to execute and hit the high notes. Without this energy, the singer would sure fall short in breath and in his ability to sing song after song.
3. To loosen up the muscles. Singers usually articulate before a performance. This is because they’ve got to loosen their jaws, their lips, and their tongues so as to properly enunciate the words of the song. It also does good to their expiratory airflow system.
4. To eliminate vocal injuries. Yes, it can happen. If you sing a series of songs or reach a very high note without a proper warming up activity, you can injure your vocal cords severely. And an injured vocal cord would mean not being able to sing until after it heals.
5. To obtain a nice vocal timbre. Warm ups don’t only prepare a singer. It can also serve as a training ground to achieve an even more melodious voice. Warming up could shape and form one’s pharynx. And if done religiously it is achievable.
Warming up isn’t just a requirement before doing a performance. It is done primarily to protect one’s singing voice and to preserve it in the process. Don’t ignore the importance of warming up. It is not only needed. It is very essential.
