Why Should You Do a Warm Up Activity Before Singing?

by Kevin on May 14, 2009

Singers, more so than other musicians need to warm up before they perform. Singing is a physically demanding thing which takes many hours of practice and preparation. There’s a lot more to singing than taking the stage and giving a performance.

Singing is a physical thing, so you’ll need to warm up before performing just as if you were working out. A warm up can prevent vocal strain – and making warm ups a habit will help you to be a better performer for a longer time. These are some of the top reasons why singers need to do a warm up before they get on stage and perform.

1. Staying in touch with himself or herself. Singers need to be both physically and psychologically prepared to sing to give a good performance. A singer is known for their ability to hit the necessary notes, true; but even more importantly, a singer earns fame for the emotion which they put into the song.

2. To call up their reserves of vocal strength and energy. A singer needs to work themselves up to the necessary energy levels to hit and hold the right notes. A singer who hasn’t warmed up properly is much more likely to hit the wall mid performance and flub notes since their energy levels will begin to flag.

3. To get their muscles prepared. Before a performance, singers generally do some articulation exercises so that the muscles of their lips, jaws and of course their tongue will be limber enough to clearly enunciate the lyrics they’ll be singing. This is also a respiratory exercise, something which is very useful to any singer.

4. To prevent injuring their vocal cords. Singing for a long time, especially if you must hit very high notes is hard on your vocal cords. Failing to properly warm up can lead to serious injuries. Injured vocal cords take a while to heal during which time, of course, you’re unable to do any singing at all!

5. To improve the timbre of their voice. Warm ups do more than get a singer ready for a performance. These warm up exercises also train the pharynx and help the singer to improve their sound. With regular practice, a singer can make changes for the better in their singing voice.

It’s not just before performances that you need to warm up. Singers need to warm up before practices as well to keep their voices in good condition and even to improve their skills. If you’re a singer, do yourself a favor and warm up before you sing every time.
