Music is an art. The voice is one of the numerous things that can be used to create music thru a process commonly known as singing. You don’t need to become a professional singer to sing. As a matter of fact, the professional singers now started as amateurs.

Here are some tips for the amateur singers.

1.	Breathe properly

Most people, especially amateur singers don’t give much to the importance of proper breathing in singing. Breathing is a major aspect that needs to be given attention.

The power, quality and richness of the voice produced for singing comes from proper breathing. This can only be achieved by working the correct muscles in breathing. (The diaphragm must be used, and no the lungs.) Also, abdominal stamina must further be developed.

2.	Have an open throat to go with an open mind

An open throat is synonymous to a relaxed throat, an organ that is more capable of producing rich sounds. When it comes to high notes, resonance is added to the produced sound.

Also, it avoids the forcing of the vocal folds. Most singers have short career spans because of complications in the voice-producing organs because they weren’t given care and attention. Their vocal folds were forced because of lack of space for vibration.

3.	Pronunciation and enunciation

These are aspects that are commonly heard when discussing speech concerns. However, they also play an important role in singing. Pure vowels must be pronounced so as to enrich the words sang as well as to make the voice more pleasant.

4.	Have the right kind of attitude

It is very important to have the right kind of training if you aspire to make it big someday. Thus, acceptance and openness of the mind is an important virtue. In this industry, singers get a lot of criticisms for them to correct their weaknesses. You must also have the willingness to continue training, even when you think you are good enough. Confidence is also an important requirement in singing.

5.	Experiences are important

More than the technical aspects of singing that must be learned from trainers, the most important lessons come from experience. Expose yourself to activities that will enhance confidence and showmanship.

With all of the tips given, you are on the right track to becoming a great singer someday.

The art of choral singing is one that can bring joy, pleasure, and satisfaction to those who commit their time and efforts to perfecting it. Like most things that are worth doing, it requires hard work, discipline and dedication, as well as a genuine love and passion. Choral singers are indeed craftsmen in their own right, artists making beautiful music. And now you want to be one of them. Here are some tips that might help you become a successful chorus singer.

Take note of your diction.

Chorus singing requires the marriage of words and sounds to provide maximum impact, so it’s necessary to enunciate the lyrics properly while singing the proper melody. For some pointers, remember that vowels are sounded on the beat, whereas consonants slightly precede it. Also, when it comes to vowels, it is important to sing tall instead of wide.

Mind your phrasing.

Just as diction is important, of equal necessity is phrasing – that is, the combination of words when singing. The meaning of a song lies in the way the words are strung and sung together to imply every emotion imaginable and to make every story unfold.

And phrasing doesn’t just refer to the sounds you make when you sing – they also consist of the non-sounds, or the silence, that are sometimes necessary in a song.

Remember that in choral singing, each and every word, just as each and every note, is important – make sure that you are able to sing every word you need to sing, that you are able to marry every word you must marry, when phrasing.

Practice, practice, practice!

As with most things, chorus singing requires a great deal of dedication, discipline, and practice. More often than not you will not sing a piece perfectly the first time you try it – it will take many more attempts before your interpretation of a piece is at the least, acceptable. Do not be discouraged when at first, you can’t seem to “get the hang of thing” – it is true what they say that practice makes perfect. With a little more hard work and a lot of discipline, you’ll be able to get it.

Love your voice.

“Love” here is not meant in a narcissistic manner – rather, to love your voice here means to take care of it, and to make sure that it is not worn out and overly exhausted each time you sing.

Be sure to warm up your voice before every performance through vocalization, get plenty of rest and watch your health.

The human voice is by far, one of the most beautiful musical instruments ever. (If not the most beautiful). And yet, the human voice is simply the result of vibrating sound waves produced by vocal chords. What is it then that lifts the human voice above other instruments and makes it unparalleled? Is it a natural talent that is bestowed to a selected few or is it a skill that can be taught and acquired?

Most artists agree that beautiful singing is conventionally defined using three criteria:

Graceful and effortless delivery

When a performer makes a piece seem so easy, there is beauty and skill in the performance. The singer executes the piece without a single sign of strain despite the fact that beneath the surface it may have been technically and physically demanding.

Mastery of proper style

A singer must have the proper understanding of the particular musical style of the piece being interpreted. Phrasing, technique and language need to be studied and mastered.

Vocal beauty

Although highly subjective, there are certain parameters that are commonly agreed upon to recognize what is a beautiful voice. For one thing, the warmth of a voice is seen as positive across the musical board. Warmth would be referring to a pleasing sensation to the ear as opposed to scratchy and harsh, which tends to irritate.

These three taken together may seem like a hard and fast rule to judge a singer’s performance. But further analysis may show you that it is not necessarily so.

The first two factors, admittedly, are relatively easy to define, as there are concrete indicators for judging effortless delivery and mastery of musical style. Because of these indicators, it may be said that delivery and mastery can be taught and developed through training. The length of time to acquire these skills, though, may vary from one performer to another.

Vocal beauty however, proves more elusive to acquire that simply undergoing training. While singing techniques can be taught, there is no defined way of acquiring a particular warmth or timbre for the human voice. It is a natural feature innate from birth. This is why certain singers remain timeless because even if other people have sung the same song, it is never sung in the same voice.

So the answer to the question is actually both. It is simply a matter of in what proportions does delivery, mastery and vocal beauty come in. And for that, there is no hard and fast formula because singing isn’t a science, but an art.
